WOOD MEETS CODE
Advanced technology and modern building codes are expanding the opportunities for wood in construction.
WOOD COSTS LESS

Wood products offer advantages in terms of material, construction and environmental costs.

WOOD IS RENEWABLE

Wood is a renewable and responsible choice that helps reduce our environmental footprint.

Nail Laminated Timber (NLT)

For more than a 100 years, nail laminated panels can be found in warehouses, for example down town Toronto where solid, heavy timber floors were used successfully.

Guardian has been fabricating Nail Laminated Timber since 1996 often for bridge applications.

Nail Laminated Timber for Buildings, often called "Mill Board" is a heavy timber panel system which can be used for floor, wall, and roof structure  should be considered as a replacement alternative for concrete slabs or steel decking in commercial, industrial,  institutional, residential, buildings were in the client n which it is often exposed to create a artistic value.  Mass timber panels are now often  in multi story buildings.

NLT is manufactured from properly grade dimensional lumber fabricated on edge - 2x4, 2x6, 2x8, 2x10, or 2x12 at 1-1/2" on center - and fabricated with nails as per design shop drawings.  As a structural diaphragm, Plywood or OSB can be fabricated one side of the NLT  as a floor or a wall element.

NLT can be butt joint however it is far better to specify Finger Joint (FJ) Lumber as this is not a premium as FJ produces a superior product.

Guardian has a 58 million board foot Finger Joint  horizontal line  and 105 million board foot vertical Finger Joint line.

Guardian manufactures tongue-and-groove wood decking often called Deck Board which like  NLT is a HEAVY TIMBER allowed by building codes in both Canada and the USA (NBCC and the IBC).

Within the Codes, NLT does not require an alternative solution as Heavy Timber as long as it is design, fabricated at least 64mm for a roof and 89mm for a floor.

Guardians patent pending "Bubble Lam" is a superior product to NLT in consideration of STC, Fire Ratings, Cost in place.

Our NLT Fabrication Process

Guardians production line fabricates a certified design, conforming product with third party verification as each panel is tested prior to shipping.

With engineers as part of our production, the Finger Joint line has a computer scanning system and we carefully grade the lumber and pre-fabricate modular panels varying in width and length; including the plywood, with the options such as a clear sealer or stain sealer, shipping, erection and finish up the joints as indicated on the shop drawings. The result is a structural floor or roof system with an appearance-grade soffit which can be exposed to view as the ceiling for the space below.
